Work Experience and Pre-Apprenticeships

Michaeljohn Training School works in partnership with schools and Local Authority groups across Greater Manchester providing pre-apprenticeship programmes at our Training Schools in Manchester and Oldham or within one of the 200 hairdressing salons engaged with MJTS.

Our Pre-Apprenticeship programmes are fully tailored to the needs of the young person and have been extremely successful in giving young people a practical and realistic taste of the hairdressing industry, leaning basic styles, techniques and background knowledge. All Pre-Apprentices are fully trained in Health & Safety and Equality & Diversity at the start of their programme. We offer pre-16 vocational qualifications on behalf of City and Guilds of London. The Level 2 Diploma and Certificate in hair services is delivered for 14-16 year olds over a 2 year period, attending the Training School one or two days a week while remaining in full time schooling. The qualification is graded pass, merit or distinction and is equivalent to 4 GCSE passes grade A*-C. Learners undergo practical training and assessment and background knowledge sessions. Written assignments can be replaced with online tests to suit the needs of the learner. We carry out initial assessments during induction stages to assess the starting point and the individual needs of the learner. Learning style, practical ability, literacy, numeracy and Dyslexia assessments help to form an individual learning agreement.

Our pre-apprenticeship qualifications introduce learners to enter the industry 1 year or 2 years ahead of most Trainee Hairdressers and helps learners develop essential employability skills. Experience of running these qualifications over the past few years has proven repeatedly that vocational qualifications at GCSE stage can help improve performance in all subjects, attendance and behaviour.

The qualifications introduce learners to a verity of techniques including the art of hairdressing, the importance of consultation, colouring, communication skills, confidence building and social awareness. In addition to hairdressing qualifications, we also offer a Diploma in Employability and Personal Development which is equivalent to 1 GCSE grade  A*-C.
